How to place a pergola beside a backyard court

Create a comfortable place to watch the game without crowding the space needed to play.

Protect the play area first

Keep posts, furniture and decorative elements outside the space needed for play and movement. The court footprint should be resolved before placing the pergola alongside it.

Study the sun and sightlines

Visit the proposed seating area at the times you expect to use it. Consider the direction of glare, shade from the house and trees, and the view of the court. An attractive layout on paper may feel different in late-afternoon sun.

Coordinate foundations and utilities

Pergola posts need a support design suited to the structure and site. Do not assume a court or patio slab can serve as the footing. Decide lighting, outlets and routes before adjacent hardscape is installed.

Leave room for everyday life

Place chairs, a table and storage on the plan, then check the space for walking and maintenance. A simple, usable arrangement often does more for the backyard than filling every corner.
